As many countries open their borders again, you might start feeling it – the travel itch. But how to scratch the travel itch in a world with Coronavirus? Where to travel during Covid-19? In this blog, we tell you why a safari is the perfect ‘physical distancing’ holiday and why now is the time to go on a once-in-a-lifetime safari to Kenya.
The wide-open spaces of the Kenyan bush come with ‘natural social distancing’.
Safaris are practically made for physical distancing: The crowd-free, outdoor experience in the wild is the ideal way to travel during Covid. Safari lodges have implemented strict health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of travellers. And most of your time you will spend in nature anyway, away from people, scouting for animals. Staying in small camps also means the only people you will encounter are staff who have spent the past few weeks in the wilderness – isolated from everyone else. Make sure you choose a tour operator who offers you a more personal and exclusive safari experience. During Covid more than ever, you will want to travel in small groups, or maybe even privately, and stay in small lodges and camps.
Travelling during Covid and always: disconnect from the stresses of the world on a safari in Kenya
Breathe in the fresh air and immerse yourself in the calmness of the wild. It will feel good to explore a different part of the world than the space between your couch and your fridge. A safari in Kenya will give you fresh energy and a new perspective. Enjoy the stillness and solitude of the Kenyan bush and get lost in the endless horizon. And this might be the best time ever to go on safari: With the numbers of travellers still low, you will have the national parks basically to yourself. No rush, no other people – just you and the wild.
And you’re not only doing something good for yourself
When deciding where to travel during Covid-19, there is another important factor to keep in mind: When going on safari in Kenya, you also support local communities and nature conservation in this beautiful part of the world. Tourism plays an important role in Kenya’s economy, and many jobs depend on it. Moreover, income generated by tourism subsidizes national parks and game reserves, which are a strong pillar of nature conservation in these regions. With the lack of tourists and income due to the Coronavirus outbreak, nature conservation in Kenya has taken a hit.
Going on safari in Kenya during Corona (Covid-19): What you need to know
Before you book your safari trip, you should ensure you’re well informed about the requirements to enter Kenya as well as return to your home country. These will differ depending on your place of residence.
If your home country is listed on this positive list, you may enter Kenya without having to quarantine, as long as you fulfil additional requirements and are free of Corona symptoms:
• Upon entry at the airport you will need to provide a negative Covid-19 PCR-test not older than 96 hours at the time of your arrival in Kenya.
• You need to fill in this Travellers Health Surveillance Form before you leave home. You will receive a QR code which you need to show upon entry in Kenya.
• You will also be screened for Covid-19 symptoms, incl. a temperature check.
• All other visa regulations still remain in place: Many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa to enter Kenya as a tourist.
Kenya as a destination was awarded the “Safe Travel Stamp” by the World Travel and Tourism Council, confirming that the country has successfully implemented global health and safety guidelines from WHO and CDC.
